Heat pumps & grants · Homeowner answer

Is a heat pump right for my house?

Short answer

It is right for a house that keeps its heat reasonably well and has radiators or underfloor heating that can warm the rooms at a lower water temperature. Many houses are, some need insulation first, and a few are not worth doing.

What changes the answer

  • insulation in the attic and walls
  • windows and draughts
  • radiator sizes
  • space for an outdoor unit and a cylinder
  • current fuel and running costs

What you can check yourself

  • find your BER if you have one
  • note the year the house was built — before 2007 usually means a Technical Assessment for the grant, unless your BER shows a Heat Loss Indicator of 2.3 or lower

What to do next

A survey with a heat loss calculation gives a straight answer and a fixed price showing the grant.
