Heating upgrades

Heating controls and upgrades for comfort where and when you need it.

Most heating complaints are not about the boiler. They are about controls that heat the whole house at once, radiators that are too small or full of sludge, and a system nobody has balanced since it was fitted. These are the fixes.

In short

Most heating complaints are fixed by better controls, correctly sized radiators and a clean, balanced system rather than a new boiler. Zoned controls with a programmable thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves are usually the cheapest upgrade. SEAI offers a €700 heating controls grant for homes built and occupied before 2011.

Controls and zoning

Separate zones for upstairs, downstairs and hot water, a programmable or smart thermostat, and thermostatic radiator valves. It is usually the most cost-effective way to cut a heating bill.

SEAI offers a €700 heating controls grant for homes built and occupied before 2011, done by an SEAI registered contractor, with a BER after the work. It cannot be combined with the heat pump grant.

Radiators

New radiators, moved radiators, larger radiators for a heat pump, towel rails and designer radiators. We drain down, fit, refill, bleed and balance — and leave the floor the way we found it.

Power flushing and system cleaning

Radiators that are cold at the bottom, a boiler that bangs or kettles, and black water when you bleed a radiator all point to sludge. A power flush pushes it out of the system; a magnetic filter and inhibitor help stop it building up again.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there a grant for heating controls?

Yes. SEAI offers a €700 heating controls grant for homes built and occupied before 2011, done by an SEAI registered contractor, with a BER after the work. It cannot be combined with the heat pump grant.

Do smart thermostats really save money?

Good controls save money by heating only the rooms you use, when you use them. Zoning upstairs, downstairs and hot water separately, with thermostatic radiator valves, makes the biggest difference in most houses.

Why are my radiators cold at the bottom?

Usually sludge (rust and magnetite) settling in the radiator. A power flush clears it, and a magnetic filter and inhibitor help stop it building up again.
