Heating systems · Homeowner answer

What temperature should my heating be set to?

Short answer

Most people are comfortable with living areas at around 18 to 21°C. On a condensing boiler, turning the boiler's flow temperature down helps it condense and run more efficiently, as long as the rooms still reach temperature.

What changes the answer

  • insulation
  • radiator sizes
  • who is in the house — older people need more warmth, while a baby's room is best kept at 16–20°C

What you can check yourself

  • check the boiler's flow temperature setting
  • see whether rooms reach temperature with it lowered

What to do next

If rooms will not reach temperature at a lower flow setting, radiators may be undersized — worth knowing before any heat pump decision.
