How do I stop pipes freezing?

Short answer

Insulate pipes in the attic, garage and on outside walls, keep the heating on low during a cold snap, and protect outside taps. Know where your stopcock is in case one bursts.

What changes the answer

  • where pipes run
  • how exposed the house is

What you can check yourself

  • check attic pipes and tanks are lagged
  • fit an insulated cover to outside taps

What to do next

It is a small, cheap job to do before winter.
