Boilers · Homeowner answer

How often should a boiler be serviced?

Short answer

Once a year. Gas Networks Ireland recommends gas appliances are serviced annually in line with the manufacturer's instructions, and most boiler warranties depend on it. Oil boilers are serviced annually as standard practice.

An oil boiler that skips a year can soot up and waste fuel. A gas boiler that skips a year may still run, but nobody has checked the combustion is safe. A service is also when small faults get caught before they become January breakdowns.

What changes the answer

  • the boiler's age and warranty terms
  • whether it is gas or oil
  • whether the property is rented

What you can check yourself

  • find the date of the last service on the record or the sticker
  • check the warranty paperwork for the service requirement

What to do next

Book the service before the heating season — late spring and summer are the easiest months to get a slot.
