Boilers · Homeowner answer

Should I repair or replace my boiler?

Short answer

Repair it if it is reasonably young, the faulty part is easy to get, and it has been reliable. Replace it when breakdowns are becoming regular, parts are hard to get, or one repair would cost a large share of a new boiler.

What changes the answer

  • age of the boiler
  • availability of parts
  • cost of this repair against a replacement
  • how often it has failed in the last two years
  • whether you are thinking about a heat pump anyway

What you can check yourself

  • find the make, model and installation date on the data plate
  • add up repairs in the last two years

What to do next

Ask for both prices side by side. We give you the repair price and a replacement price so the decision is yours.
