Worcester Bosch EA or EA 227 fault code — what it means

Short answer

EA, shown as EA 227 on newer Worcester Bosch boilers, means the boiler tried to light and did not see a flame. It locks out for safety. The commonest causes are no gas getting to the boiler, a frozen condensate pipe in cold weather, or a worn ignition or flame-sensing electrode.

A frozen condensate pipe is the classic winter cause in Cork. The boiler produces water as it runs, and if the pipe outside freezes the water backs up and the boiler shuts down. Thawing it usually gets the heating back; lagging it or re-routing it stops it happening again.

If it is not the weather, the usual causes found on a repair visit are the ignition electrode, the flame sensor, the gas valve or the fan — each confirmed by proper diagnosis rather than guesswork.

What changes the answer

  • whether other gas appliances (hob, fire) are working
  • whether it is freezing outside and the condensate pipe runs outdoors
  • whether it happens every time or only now and then
  • how long since the last service

What you can check yourself

  • check that a gas hob or gas fire lights — if not, the problem is the gas supply, not the boiler
  • if it is freezing, look at the white plastic condensate pipe outside; thaw it with warm (not boiling) water
  • press and hold the reset button once, as shown in the user manual

What to do next

If one reset does not clear it, or it keeps coming back, book a repair. Repeated resets will not fix a worn electrode or a gas valve fault. Never take the casing off a gas boiler. Anything inside the case is a job for a Registered Gas Installer.
